Goodbye Sweet Girl

Our dog has died.

Our girl Boxer, Lucy, passed quietly in her sleep last Monday.  She had been suffering from a very bad case of pancreatitis that did not improve with treatments.  It didn't take long.  Two weeks and she was gone.  We were terribly afraid we were going to have to make the horrendous decision to put her to sleep.  But then she saved us from that and passed that morning.

It has been so very, very sad.  The boys have been weepy, distraught and confused.  Full of questions about death and Heaven and what she is doing with God.  We do our best to explain.  But how do explain how sweet Lucy actually gets to Heaven so she can play fetch with God?  It's not been easy.  An important life lesson, yes.  But certainly not easy.

Super Hubs has been very sad.  We realized through this whole process that he has not lost anyone close to him in many, many years.  His father, though struggling with his disease, is still here.  I've lost a friend's son and others.  But together, as a family, this was our first death of someone close.  A blessing in some ways;  other ways, not so much.  It's been hard.

Thoughts of her come to me occasionally and really catch me off guard.  I did not expect to grieve quite like this.  I grew up on a farm.  Animals die.  But I realize now that I've never had a family pet, who I lived with, slept with, cuddled and loved so greatly, die.  Growing up, our pets never entered our house.  Pets living in your house?  A different story.  A member of your family.  Most certainly.  And I miss her.

The boys are entertaining thoughts of a new pet.  We have a male Boxer who is sad now.  They think he needs a new friend.  But hubs and I aren't ready yet.  Not quite ready for a new puppy to overtake that part of our hearts or home.  We feel like we owe it to sweet Lucy to give her a little more time to be the 'other girl' in the house.  So we'll wait.

Have you lost a pet?  Were you too, surprised at the pain of the loss?

New Year--it is still January, right?

It is still January so technically, ahem!  I can still say
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I've thought many, MANY days about catching up on the blog but then doubt would interfere and I'd ask myself, "What do I really have to say right now?"

I am at a crossroads of sorts.  Not quite sure what to blog about.  My life has changed.  My focus is much different than it was six months ago.

Or is it?

I went back to recap on some of my blog entries from the past year.  They reflect a woman who was driven in many ways.  Driven to create the best home for her family.  Driven to feed her family well, AND frugally.  Driven to be a better wife, a better Mom, a much better follower of Christ.

Those things have not changed.

My daily routine has changed.  But those goals are still there.  Still REALLY there!  With some new challenges mixed in.  As you all know, I work Monday through Friday again.  A new career focus.  New challenges professionally.

But the depth of who I am remains the same.  I struggle to make sure our marriage is growing.  I want to show my husband that he is the head of our family.  I want to get better at giving him the reins in which to lead our family and lead our marriage.  That means that I continue to learn to let go.  Let go of my selfish will.  Let go of my stubborn emotions.  Let go of my need to control!  Go out of my way to encourage him, to support him, to listen to him and to show him how much he means to me.

I continue to work at this Mama-gig.  There are still numerous lessons to teach our sons.  Many kisses to send their way.  Hugs too.   I still want SH and I to lead their education and growth.  It helps that we absolutely love the Christian preschool that they are attending.  Every day they come home reciting a new Bible verse, talking about how they learned about Christ that day and singing songs over and over and OVER again!!  We are very comfortable that we made the right choice of schools for them to attend.  And they love it so that helps us to feel so very comfortable with the decision.   We are learning more and more every day about their personalities and how that is growing in to the young men they are.  They are set in many ways.  Big Boy continues to be emotional, very sensitive and very thoughtful.  You cannot get a single thing past that boy.  We must carefully choose our words and actions, every day.  Because he picks up on them every. single. time.  Little Guy continues to be the free spirit.  He is goofy and enjoys to be the life of the house!  We must be careful not to assume that means he is silly and reckless because he is not.  He simply does not take any part of life too seriously.  That will help our Type A driven home, A LOT!

There are goals that I have for 2010.  Every year I try to identify things that I want to accomplish, both for myself and for our family.  This year is no different.  So in no sense of order at all:

1)  Strengthen our family bond with Christ.  SH and I have talked about this and have made some concrete measures to include God in our daily lives.  We pray every day on the way to school with the boys.  We pray at meals.  We pray at other times too.  We talk about our behaviors and how they either please God or displease Him.  We don't attend church as often as we feel like we should.  Let's face it, church is a habit.  And one I feel like we need to strengthen in our entire family.  We are somewhat torn as to what church to attend so that is a journey we must attend to.  We talk about God daily and His sacrifices for us.  We don't talk about our sacrifices for Him nearly as much.  Room for growth in this area, definitely.

2)  Remove ourselves from $50,000 of debt, which will include remaining credit card debt, home equity, student loan and mortgage.  We won't be debt free but we can be closer to the prize!  Definitely something we can do if we really focus.  REALLY focus!

3)  Take charge of my health.  Let's face it.  I'm almost 42 years old.  42 folks.  That is, ahhhhhhh, close to middle age?!  No matter how young I feel.  No matter how late I started with the whole parenting gig (so I feel like I'm 30 with preschoolers, when in reality I'm almost 42 with preschoolers!).  The body is just not gonna hold up like it did 12 years ago.  Time to really start looking at ensuring those healthcare dollars are well spent on prevention!

4)  And as always, there is a smattering of decorating projects, garden plans, weekend trips to plan.  Little things to make family memories.  Those change every other week so I'll keep those on the back burner.

5)  Keep up with the blog.  Even the mundane, inconsequential things.  Because someone may find them mildly entertaining.  And I love going back to read where life has taken us in the past year.

HAPPY 2010 EVERYONE!

Are you wondering?

If you read my blog....and ahem, obviously.....

Anyhoo....y'all are probably wondering what's going on around here?  I've been a bit more than absent these past few days.

Sorry folks.

Major life change.

I said MAJOR life change!

I got a job.  Another job.  And not just another job.  But a Monday through Friday kinda job.  Replaced all those other jobs I've been doing.

What was I thinking?

Actually, I was approached a few weeks ago by the hospital where I work, asking if I would take a nurse manager position.  Then they made it worthwhile, if yaknowwhatImean....  And I thought about it.  And we prayed about it.  A lot.  And decided in these economic times, we would do it.  I say we because it is such a HUGE change in our family that it truly had to be a family decision.

We looked at schools for the boys and have found a fantastic Christian school in which we enrolled them.  They've been there for two weeks now and LOVE IT!  Really love it!!  And they are learning a lot, and having a ball with the other kids.  I kinda feel bad they haven't had that.  We have playdates but honestly, they are such social little guys that this is really fitting for them.  And I'm still in mourning over not being able to homeschool at this time.  I really wanted to.  But alas, we decided not to at this time.  It is always there if we want it and we may take advantage of it at another time in our lives.

We made this decision for many reasons, one is the financial aspect of it all.  Let's face it.  These are lean times and nursing is a great profession.  But also, in our grand master plan (our plan, not God's and we fully understand that....)  we may move again to be closer to family.  They live several states away.  And this opportunity would make me much more marketable in that endeavor, should we ever do it.  Always nice to have options.

And mostly, we prayed and truly felt that God put this into our lives at this time for a reason, His reason.  I'm not quite sure what that it is.  It may not be for me.  It may be for someone else.  Who knows?  He knows.  I fully trust that.  I fully trust that He will lead me through and that I will do my best to follow.

I will be continuing the blog but maybe not quite as often as before.  I may not participate in as many carnivals and memes as I have.  But I'll keep y'all up to date on what is happening in our little world.  And I do have some terrific new pictures coming soon on the painting we've been doing and some of the cute little things I've gotten together.  I PROMISE!!  Coming soon!!!

Triathlon Women ROCK!

We had a GREAT time at the Trek Women's Triathlon in Orlando this year!! A bunch of did the Tri as a relay team. Already, a few of us, myself included, are planning to train for next year's Tri and do the entire thing ourselves!! What a goal!

I have to say it was one of the most fantastic experiences of my life! There were women of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities! I was most impressed with a few women who had disabilities such as a prosthetic limb, who completed the race in outstanding time. It was empowering and awesome.
I would fully recommend participating in an event such as this. Whether is a Breast Cancer 3-day walk, a Trek Womens Triathlon or the Alzheimer's Memory Walk; they are all inspiring and very motivational. What a great event!!
Thanks to all my women colleagues and friends who completed this year's Triathlon with me! Y'all inspire and make me LOVE being a WOMAN! Thanks girls!!!

Friend Makin' Monday!

My friend Sarah over at I Blame Mom is in on this great little meme today too! I thought I'd jump in here and reveal a little more about the mystery o' me!

Here it is. Today's task: Copy and paste these questions to your blog and give them your own answers.

Then head on over to Sarah or All That is Good where it all started and look at everyone else's answers. Go ahead! Get to know another blogger and MAKE A FRIEND today! Yeah!!

You wouldn't be caught dead where?: at my birth...obviously! Other than that....oh let's just say a pit of viper snakes would not be a good hangin' spot for me.

Do you have any hidden talents?: All my wonderful and amazing talents are already out there! LOL! However, some of them cannot be revealed to the general public and you will just have to wonder now won't you?

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at: I'm a pretty decent cook, according to SH and the friends. And this Mama gig is fitting in rather nicely. Most days, I think that we are all living and breathing and that is a good thing!

Name two things you consider yourself to be very bad at: I am not a huge fan of logic problems. Much to my hubs chagrin--he is good at them and of course, takes every possible moment to stump me to prove his superiority. And then there is the bad habit of not sticking with a task or project until the very end. I tend to give up a little easily at times.

Have you ever won a trophy? Several for Top Pig at the 4-H fair when I was 9 years old. Still have them. Oh the pride!

Name one thing not many people know about you: I think I'm a rather open book. Especially now that this blog exists. But sometimes I'm caught off guard that people "never imagined" something about me. I guess I would have to say the farm kid thing---people are always shocked that I grew up a farm kid in the Midwest.

Name your earliest memory: Waking up to hear my brother's new puppy whimpering in the basket in the hallway. Her name was Chase and she lived to be 17 years old, believe it or not! She was the BEST dog in the world!

What was your favorite musical group in jr. high? Why Jr. High? I don't remember but I was a huge fan of Air Supply back in those days.

What was something the worst roommate you ever had did? I've never had a roommate! Only a husband. And let's just say that I don't find expulsion of bodily fluids something I want to hear....

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?: My cousin and I played that we were famous singers, all. the. time! I really wanted to grow up and sing country music. I'm still sad I didn't pursue that dream.

What was your worst dating experience?: I was not a big dating kind of gal. More like hung out with groups of people. But I did have what I *thought* would be a great date with a guy to see a Picasso exhibit at the local museum. The exhibit was amazing! The guy---strange is not quite adequate enough word to describe him! Conversation kept going in the direction of really personal hygiene issues and yes, this was a FIRST date and no, that is not something I really talk about with even my closest friends. I ran, not walked, away from that one!

If you were about to die what would your last meal be?: A wonderful, fresh, hearty loaf of multi-grain bread with Irish butter. For the WHOLE MEAL! Yum!

Who is the most important person in you life?: I can't limit that to one. That is too difficult. Everyone has a role and of course, my husband and children are equally important. I will say though that my God comes first and foremost, always!

If your house was on fire what 3 things would you grab on your way out?: My children and husband. That's three.....everything else can be replaced.

Did you learn anything? How about it....want to be my friend?!

Randomness....

I love how the leaves fall in my yard and decorate the season of Spring in Florida. I'm not so sure the neighbors love it.

I want to learn how to make artisan bread. Really, really good bread. And slather on some good Irish butter. Oh. my.

I guess I know a little about a lot of stuff. At least that is what people tell me. Sometimes I think that I just don't concentrate well in one area. I don't bother with details.

I used to question myself every day whether I should be doing something else. Today, I've found my "something else" and it is completely fulfilling and really where God intended me to be. It's called being Mama.

My mind is a constant source of thinking and planning. I don't think it is as creative in the arts and crafty sense, but in the 'I can do this with that' sense. Just today instead of buying Febreze, I made my own and I like it so much better than the chemical-ly stuff.

I wish my house looked like this. Is that possible with two little boys who dismantle the sofa every evening?

There are many things I feel very confident in. There are a few things I feel completely inept in. I suppose that's a pretty good balance.

I am trying to be more girly. I've never been very girly. Comes from growing up on a farm with boys. Not a whole lotta support for girly stuff. Thank you God for giving us boys.

I get a bit obsessed with things. And that is the very character trait that my husband has that drives me crazy. Hmmmm....wonder if that bothers him?

I'm really a farm kid trapped in a adult city girl's body. Not many people know that. And oddly, they are always surprised.

I always wanted to write. I just never thought it was good enough. I'm still not sure I would ever write something somebody found interesting enough to actually read. But I've gotten almost 1000 hits on this blog since April, when I started the counter. So maybe?

We've thought often and seriously about moving to another country. Take advantage of a job opportunity for SH. I really think it would be an amazing journey and would love to try it. SH still isn't sure. I really feel as though God intends for us to live as a family in a way that is different than what we are doing now. So I pray about it.

I'm a Christian but not necessarily loyal to one denomination. In fact, I've attended and belonged to several churches in my lifetime. Some people consider that an inability to commit. I simply think that they are very similar and that it's not about the politics, it's about my God. The only church that never made sense to me was a Unitarian. Lovely place to visit. Lovely people. Strange not to talk about Jesus during church. So I left.

I love bluegrass music. Don't laugh. It's really good. Especially anything tied to Alison Krauss.

I guess I could do one of those "100 things about me" posts.....

Oh distractions & desires!

I've decided that my outside job is really impeding on my life right now. I don't work that much---part-time on the weekends and I pick up teaching jobs here and there. But I'm not wanting to do any of it right now. And it is because of this new blogging hobby I have going....and all the wonderful things I'm seeing and learning about!! I REALLY want to be at home trying to paint furniture, helping my kids to create fun art projects, getting the garden tilled and planted....the list goes on and on and on! I would SO rather be doing these things! I'm thinking maybe if I make myself a list, gather my goals all in one place, that *maybe* I might, just might, get something accomplished and feel so much better! Here is my list...

1) paint two side tables for the living area. Something like this.
2) create a wall collage for the spare bedroom--I'm thinking canvas squares with various colored scrap paper collages
3) learn to crochet wash cloths
4) paint the master bath's accessories....because I truly cannot stand pastel lavender/green/mauve any more!
5) re-do the bathroom. I was thinking of getting rid of the wallpaper border....Little Man A.K.A. 'The Psychic' figured that out and was so kind to RIP THE PAPER off in two very obvious places! Guess we'll move this one up the list now...
6) paint the family area
7) paint a few of the kitchen accessories--getting rid of the light green and going more dark green/gold-brown/deep brown colors. Very Tuscany-like.
8) going to do some window mistreatments...yes, you heard it....mistreatments much like my creative friend at Thrifty Decor Chick. In fact, she really is to blame for all this angst....I SO want to grow up and be just like her!
9) container garden at least 4 new veggies in the next month.
10) work on the boy's homeschool 'curriculum' that starts in August.

OK, OK...please stop me! It'll take me a month of Sundays to get even one of these done! But there---the first step to recovery is to create a plan, right?!

Day two...

I dreamt about the blog last night. I dreamt of the incredibly creative, witty and thought-provoking statements I would make. I dreamt of how the entire cyber-world would recognize me and believe that I was truly what it has been missing. Then I woke to the sound of Little Bit (that would be our two-year-old male child of unbounding and unending energy) screaming....MILK MAMA! CHOCOLATE MILK! And began my day again.....

I suppose that if this is even going to reach a level of mildly interesting, I should try to explain a bit of myself and those crazy individuals that surround me. There is Superman Hubby.....been married to him for close to five years now. Yes dear...I do remember our wedding anniversary in September. I just cheated and looked at the inscription on my wedding band. We've been together for about twice that.

Next is Big Boy...our 3 1/2 year old, approaching genius boy child. OK...maybe not technically genius but he has an amazing memory. Steel trap that kid. Doesn't ever let me forget the dog food....or gum for that matter.

Lastly, but most certainly not least, is Little Bit. He's 2 1/2 years old. He's the most inquisitive, strong-willed and absolutely challenging person of my life. He has my quick temper and Daddy's stubborn strength. Not a pleasant combination most days.

Fifteen months apart those two boys. Yes, you can gasp. You can even ask what were you thinking?!?!! At this point, I don't have an answer. But before Little Bit was actually here and in screaming mode, I was thinking, Awww, how cute. So close these two brothers. How adorable. Really?!??

Me? I find myself at 40, wondering if I've done enough at this point in my life. And knowing that I have a finite amount of time to do more. Not that I'm thinking life will be over anytime soon, at least I hope that is not in God's plan. But I do recognize that the past 40 years have gone by much faster than I ever imagined. I mean, I have SO much that I want to accomplish yet. So here I am, prepared to start my next "to-do" list in life. Starting with each day. I want to incorporate more happiness in every day, more smiles, more giggles, more prayer and more thankfulness in each day. I've always been one to journal. Why not do this through a blog? We'll see....here we go on yet another adventure.
